SPECIES NAME(s)

Argentine hake

COMMON NAMES

Merluza común, merluza (Spanish)

There are four different Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) stocks in the South Atlantic Ocean, spanning from southern Brazil to southern Argentina (Bezzi et al. 1995)(Vaz-dos-Santos et al. 2009)(Vaz dos Santos et al. 2006)(Vaz-dos-Santos and Schwingel 2015): 1) from 21°S to 29°S, in Southeastern Brazil, 2) from 29°S to 41°S, shared by Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, 3) from 41°S to 54°S in Southern Argentina (Patagonian stock), and 4) Falkland Islands/ Malvinas stock.

The stock as a whole is assessed by the Argentinean Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) (Irusta et al. 2022). The Common Fishing Zone (ZCP), an area that covers part of the stock, is managed jointly by Argentina and Uruguay. However, a separate assessment is performed for the ZCP exclusively (CTMFM 2021).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Annual stock assessments are performed for the stock, including reference points (i.e. (Irusta et al. 2022)), but previous reports are not available.
  • The CTMFM specifically designated one Working Group for the Argentine Hake to advice with scientific information and appropriate management measures (CTMFM 2023).
