A study using mtDNA identified two populations of pelagic thresher shark within the Pacific Ocean, considered Evolutionary Significant Units (ESU) (Cardeñosa et al. 2014). One in the eastern and the second in the western Pacific Ocean, with individuals from Hawaii composed of both ESU's (Cardeñosa et al. 2014). A previous study (Trejo 2005) have shown strong population structure between the eastern and western Pacific, indicating limited flow of gene's across the Paciifc
