Previous genetic research (Trejo 2005) indicated some genetic structuring between the Eastern and Western Pacific ocean. Later, another study using mtDNA identified two populations of pelagic thresher sharks within the Pacific Ocean, considered Evolutionary Significant Units (ESU) (Cardeñosa et al. 2014).
