Previous genetic research (Trejo 2005) indicated some genetic structuring between the Eastern and Western Pacific ocean. Later, another study using mtDNA identified two populations of pelagic thresher sharks within the Pacific Ocean, considered Evolutionary Significant Units (ESU) (Cardeñosa et al. 2014)

  • Fishing of pelagic thresher and other shark species is banned by Ecuadorian national law and there exists a National Action Plan aimed at the conservation and management of shark populations in Ecuador, including measures regarding fishing gear restrictions established in the Ecuadorian national framework in order to minimize pelagic thresher bycatch.
