Atlantic striped bass is an anadromous species, naturally found in Western Atlantic drainages, from St. Lawrence River, Canada to Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, in northern Gulf of Mexico (ASMFC, 2013). It is managed as a single stock from Maine to North Carolina coast. Striped bass from Albemarle Sound/ Roanoke River sounds (North Carolina) is considered a different stock that contributes minimally to the coastal migratory stock and is not included in the coast-wide assessment (ASMFC, 2014). From the Tar‐Pamlico River in North Carolina south, populations are believed primarily endemic and riverine and do not undertake extensive Atlantic Ocean migrations, thus are considered different stocks (ASMFC, 2013). This profile applies to the Atlantic striped bass coast migratory stock, including Hudson River, Delaware River, and Chesapeake Bay and tributaries. Genetic analysis has shown clear genetic differences between all of these regions (Gauthier et al. 2013).
