Mackerel in Northwest Atlantic are thought to be of one overall stock with two component; one which spawns in US waters and one which spawns in Canadian waters. During late winter/early spring catches by both countries is on a mixture of the two. A recent assessment by DFO tuned to a Canadian only egg index was recently peer reviewed and may provide information on that component of the stock. A similar analysis has not been undertaken by the United States.
