SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Dicentrarchus labrax

SPECIES NAME(s)

European seabass

European seabass is distributed in the Eastern Atlantic, from Norway to Senegal, and in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. This species is able to migrate several hundreds of kilometers to find its spawning grounds along the north and east Atlantic coast of Europe. The stock structure is not clear but existing evidence does not support current ICES stock advice units for sea bass in divisions 8a-b (northern and central Bay of Biscay; this profile) and divisions 4b-c, 7a and 7d-h (central and southern North Sea, Irish Sea, English Channel, Bristol Channel and Celtic Sea) (ICES 2023). However, further research is required (ICES 2023). ICES provides advice also for divisions 8c and 9a (Southern Bay of Biscay and Atlantic Iberian waters).
