This species is found in most oceans, it inhabits the pelagic-neritic zone and it is a highly migratory species. It is is an important commercial fishery in the Eastern Central Atlantic, Northeast Atlantic, Southeast Atlantic, Antarctic/Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Southwest Pacific (IUCN 2013). However, no information about its stock structure nor stock assessments could be found. The Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) database indicates that the main catches in the Northeast Atlantic are obtained in the Bay of Biscay and Portuguese waters.
