SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Paralabrax nebulifer

SPECIES NAME(s)

Barred sand bass, cabrilla

Barred sand bass is distributed from Bahía Magdalena (Mexico) to Santa Cruz, California (USA). As there is no consensus on the population structure - unique population along the distribution area according to (Paterson et al. 2015) and possibility of northern and southern populations (Benavides n.d.) - and no assessment is known to be conducted, a management unit in Mexican waters is here considered. The species is managed within the Serranidae group, according to the Carta Nacional Pesquera (SAGARPA 2012) being Baja California Sur the most important state in terms of catches (Bernal 2016)

Fisheries

Within FishSource, the term "fishery" is used to indicate each unique combination of a flag country with a fishing gear, operating within a particular management unit, upon a resource. That resource may have a known biological stock structure and/or may be assessed at another level for practical or jurisdictional reasons. A fishery is the finest scale of resolution captured in FishSource profiles, as it is generally the scale at which sustainability can most fairly and practically be evaluated.
