Pterois volitans is native from the Indo-West Pacific. It has been introduced in the western Atlantic in mid-1980s and it has spread throughout the US Atlantic coast from Florida up to Massachusetts, as well as the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico (NCCOS 2017; IUCN 2015). A national research project plan is underway since 2012 to assess the impacts and develop management strategies for invasive lionfish in the Atlantic (NCCOS 2017) and a prevention and management plan was approved in 2015 (ANSTF 2015).
