The Japanese carpet shell clam (also called the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum) has a native range in the Western Pacific but has been introduced to Europe and the UK either accidentally or purposefully (Jones et al. 2018). Generally propagated via aquaculture a naturalized population is found in Poole Harbor as well as other locations in the UK and Ireland. The Poole Harbor fishery is certified by the MSC under Section 3.1.5 Scope of Assessment in Relation to Introduced Species Based Fisheries (Jones et al. 2018).
