Genypterus brasiliensis is considered a synonym of Genypterus blacodes, based on the 1999 FAO species catalogue (Froese and Pauly 2017). However, a more recent study indicates that morphological and molecular approaches strongly support that Genypterus brasiliensis should be considered as valid species (Mabragaña et al. 2011). As the status of this species is not clear, this multispecies profile for the genus Genypterus was created until this uncertainty can be clarified.
