SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Merluccius bilinearis

SPECIES NAME(s)

Silver hake

COMMON NAMES

Atlantic hake, New England hake, Northern stock silver hake, whiting

Two stocks of silver hake on the U.S. Atlantic coast (a northern and a southern) are assumed for assessment and management purposes, based on differences in morphology, otolith shape, population trends and the habitat interruption at Georges Bank. There are indications however that there is a single population with incomplete mixing over Georges Bank. The relationship with Canadian stocks is also not fully understood (NEFSC, 2006). They are managed separately due to differences in exploitation patterns (Garrison and Link 2000). One stock ranges from the Gulf of Maine to northern Georges Bank, while the other stock ranges from southern Georges Bank to Cape Hatteras. Both can be found on Georges Bank during summer months (Brodziak 2001).
