SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Argopecten irradians

SPECIES NAME(s)

Atlantic bay scallop, Bay scallop

Atlantic bay scallops are found in shallow inshore estuaries of US Atlantic coast. Genetic structure is not fully understood but it was observed that connectivity between estuaries is low, thus sub-populations need to be treated as separate management units (NCDMF, 2007; Bert et al., 2011). Commercial fisheries for Bay Scallops only occur in Massachusetts, New York, and North Carolina; managed independently by state governments (MacKenzie, 2008).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Bay Scallops are a short lived species, spawning once over their lifetime.
