SPECIES NAME(s)

Gay's little venus

Tawera elliptica (syn. Tawera gayi), is a bivalve mollusk commonly known as Juliana in Chile, is found in the southeast Pacific and southwest Atlantic, from Valparaiso to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, including Falkland Islands (Malvinas) (Palomares and Pauly 2021). Its commercial extraction in Chile is concentrated both in the northern area of the Chiloé inner sea and in the vicinity of the Desertores Islands.

A recent study on metapopulation dynamics indicates a decrease of connectivity amon among patches and a condition of self-recruitment of some larger patches (Figueroa-Fábrega et al. 2018). Some stock assessments have been conducted in Lagos Region (previously X Region) and a management plan is in place in this region (SUBPESCA 2021).

Divers use a hand implement called "chinguillo" which allows the extraction and retention of legal sized individuals (MARES 2009).
