SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Haliotis laevigata

SPECIES NAME(s)

Greenlip abalone

As outlined in (SCS Global 2017) there is uncertainty in the stock structure of Greenlip abalone. Some genetic indicators suggest high connectivity across the species range sampled, while sub sections of the genome suggest populations of

  • the western part of the greenlip abalone distribution (from Outback to Windy Outside);
  • the Albany sub-area (Parrys Bay and Whalebone Port);
  • the Hopetoun sub-area (from Inner Island to Mason);
  • the West sub-area (Fanny Cove and Burton Rocks); and
  • the eastern sampling area (from Rob Island to Gulch).

These happen to correspond to areas with differing oceanographic/hydrographic processes, particularly in water currents and oxygen levels. As such, there remains uncertainty in the connectedness of local populations to the broader range of the species, and as such is classified as unascertained until more research is conducted.
