SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)
Sardinops sagax
SPECIES NAME(s)
Pacific sardine, Australian pilchard, California pilchard, Japanese pilchard, Southern African pilchard, South American pilchard
(Subpesca 2002) mentions the species can be found from Guayaquil (Ecuador) to southern Chiloé (Chile), and from the shore to 150 nautical miles and 250 meters deep. However, there are no studies on the population structure of this species through the Chilean coast, and it has traditionally been segregated using fisheries information in three or four stocks: Ecuador and Northern Peru, Central-Southern Peru and Northern Chile (Arica and Parinacota to Antofagasta Regions), Atacama-Coquimbo in Chile, and finally, the Talcahuano fishery in Chile (Alheit and Niquen 2004). Stocks are differentiated by assessment and management units. Nevertheless, a division of water masses was found at the southern edge of the Antofagasta Region. From there large differences in egg abundance and biomass appeared, being much greater in the northern mass (Castillo et al. 1994). This could have led to some differentiation of stocks, but it needs to be further studied.
