SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Sarda chiliensis

SPECIES NAME(s)

Eastern Pacific bonito, South Pacific bonito

Although a biological stock is not defined for the Eastern Pacific bonito (Sarda chiliensis), the subspecies Sarda chiliensis chiliensis is assessed as an independent unit in Peruvian waters. As a result, the profile is structured around a Peruvian assessment unit (Fischer et al. 1995)(Viñas et al. 2010).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Even though the Eastern Pacific Bonito’s fishery does not possess a fishing ordinance regulation (ROP, in Spanish), the transitory normativity includes minimum size at capture, tolerance of juveniles captured (%), guidelines for fishing gears and biological reference points (PRODUCE 2019).
