A recent study in southern India revealed that all individuals previously reported as Heterocarpus gibbosus are actually a misidentification of its closely related species H. chani., which has only recently been reported from India (Yang et al. 2017). The stock structure of this species in this region was also recently studied and a distinct population was determined for southwestern India (Ganesan et al. 2020).
