SPECIES NAME(s)

Barnacle, Goose Barnacle, Gooseneck Barnacle, Leaf Barnacle

COMMON NAMES

Goose, Goose-neck, Leaf barnacle

Found in the northeast Atlantic from 48 degrees N to 14 degrees N, the goose (or gooseneck) barnacle (Pollicipes pollicipes) is found intertidally in many locations across Europe and northern Africa. It exhibits a high degree stock structure, with local populations of sessile adults contributing and sharing larvae across a wider pool within a broader region (Molares and Freire 2003). As such, they have a meta-population type structure making assessment and management difficult (Molares and Freire 2003). Because of the uncertainty in population structure, this profile will deal with only fishery in NW Spain, in the autonomous region of Galicia.
