SPECIES NAME(s)

Scads nei, (multispecies)

COMMON NAMES

Roundscad, Galunggong. In FMA-4, additional local names applied to certain species are: batikuling, bodboron, budloy, burot, kibol, lingin, ering-ering, pula-ikog, tamodios, marot, tamarong.

This is a multi-species profile for the scads nei, Decapterus spp.  (mainly D. macrosoma and D. russelli  but also other species of Decapterus genus) (BFAR 2015) in the Philippines Fishery Management Area 4 (FMA - 4), which covers the southeastern part of the Sulu Sea and includes  Panay Gulf, waters off of the islands of Panay, Guimaras, and western Negros, down to the  Zamboanga Peninsula, and the Sulu Archipelago. FMAs were established in January 2019 (Fisheries Administrative Order 263) to focus on the ecosystem approach to fisheries management. There is no available information at the species level. This profile may undergo restructuring in the future as new information comes to light.

The National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP) presents data for each species separately in areas where stock assessments occur. Catch landings of all scads species, however, are aggregated under the “small pelagics” group (Santos et al. 2017).  In the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA),  production volume is reported as “roundscad (galunggong)” as used in trade (see OpenSTAT).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Stock assessments for scads exist for some fishing grounds within FMA-4.
