The species is distributed in the Southwest Atlantic, nominally from southern Brazil to central Argentina (FAO 2017) but recent reports suggest its range is expanding north to central Brazil (Froese and Pauly 2017). The stock structure is unknown thus a management unit within Brazilian waters is considered.
