IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Scylla serrata

SPECIES NAME(s)

Indo-Pacific swamp crab

COMMON NAMES

mud crab, mangrove crab, giant mud crab, Indo-Pacific swimming crab

The crab Scylla serrata is the most abundant of four common mud crab species found in the magrove regions of Indonesia (Yayasan Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia 2017; Suman et al. 2018). Globally the species is widely distributed throughout the Indo-west Pacific region (Alberts-Hubatsch et al. 2016), ranging from South Africa, the Red Sea, and southern Japan east to New Zealand and Tahiti (Fofonoff et al. 2018). Genetic analysis indicates at least three distinct stocks of S. serrata throughout its extent: Western Indian Ocean, Eastern Australia; and Western Pacific Ocean (WPO), North-Western Australia (Alberts-Hubatsch et al. 2016). At a more local scale, meanwhile, phenotypic differences are evident, but genetic distinctions are not (Alberts-Hubatsch et al. 2016). There is commercial production of mud crab (all species) in all regions of Indonesia except Jakarta, with North Sumatra being the most important (approximately 40% of production), followed by Central Kalimantan, East Java and Riau Islands (roughly 5-6% of production per each) (Pane A.R.P. et al. 2021).
