Further studies are recommended to include spawning areas and migration as well as other geographic regions such as the Mediterranean and the Black Seas. Nevertheless, a unique biological stock is identified in the NE Atlantic region according to genetic studies (Blanquer et al., 1992) and other biological parameters (Delbare and De Clerck, 1999). However, Vandamme (2014) considers as appropriate the designation of an assessment unit in the North Sea, Skagerrak and Kattegat, English Channel (Subarea IV and Divisions IIIa and VIId,e) (ICES, 2015a). This profile reflects the North Sea, Skagerrak and Kattegat, English Channel assessment area. A distinct assessment unit is assumed in the Baltic Sea.  Brill is mainly a bycatch species in fisheries for plaice and sole, and that is managed together with turbot (Psetta maxima) under a combined species TAC.
