SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Decapterus spp

SPECIES NAME(s)

Scads nei

COMMON NAMES

Roundscad, Galunggong. In FMA-10, additional local names applied to certain species are: budloy, pula-ikog (for redtail scad, D. kurroides); bodboron, burot, lingin (for shortfin scad, D. macrosoma); bodboron, kibol, malimno (for Japanese scad, D. maruadsi); and bodboron, ering-ering, budloy (roughear scad, D. tabl).

This is a multi-species profile for the scads nei, Decapterus spp. (mainly D. macrosoma and D. russelli  but also other species of Decapterus genus) (BFAR 2015) in the Philippines Fishery Management Area 10 (FMA - 10), covering the waters in eastern waters of the Visayan Sea, down to the Camotes Sea (surrounded by the islands of Leyte, Bohol and Cebu), Danajon Bank  (northern Bohol), Cebu Strait  (between Cebu and Bohol), and to the westernmost part of the Bohol Sea, to include the waters off the western side of Siquijor, southern Negros, and Dapitan (northern Mindanao).  FMAs were established in January 2019 (Fisheries Administrative Order 263) to focus on the ecosystem approach to fisheries management. The stock structure of scads species in the Philippines is unknown. This profile may undergo restructuring in the future as new information comes to light.

The National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP) presents data for each species separately in areas where stock assessments occur. Catch landings of all scads species, however, are aggregated under the “small pelagics” group (Santos et al. 2017).  In the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA),  production volume is reported as “roundscad (galunggong)” as used in trade (see OpenSTAT).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Stock assessments for scads exist for some fishing grounds within FMA-10.
