SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Prionace glauca

SPECIES NAME(s)

Blue shark

Within the Pacific Ocean blue sharks are found in both hemispheres, with no genetic evidence of the distinction between the northern and southern basins; however, mark-recaptured data have not documented movements across the equator (ISC 2017).

For stock assessment purposes current evidence justifies considerations of two different populations in the northern and southern Pacific Ocean (ISC 2017).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Fishing of blue sharks is banned by the Ecuadorian national law and there exists a National Action Plan aimed at the conservation and management of shark populations in Ecuador.
