SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Paralithodes camtschaticus

SPECIES NAME(s)

Red king crab, Краб камчатский

Red king crab was introduced into the Barents Sea during the 1960-1970s and is currently found in NE Norway and Russian offshore waters (Stevens, 2014). Jørstad et al. (2007) found no genetic divergence on Barents Sea and Bering Sea samples analyzed however Zelenina et al. (2008) identified significant differences between native and introduced populations in the region. An agreement between Norway and Russia was in place until 2007. Currently Norway performs stock surveys and the stock is assessed in Norwegian waters (MTIF, 2011). Thus within Barents Sea, distinct assessment units are considered with correspondent management areas and measures: Norway and Russia.
