COMMON NAMES

Mutton

Mutton snapper (Lutjanus analis) presents a wide distribution in the western Atlantic, ranging from the United States to Brazil including Bermuda, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. The limits of the biological structure are not completed clear. Mutton Snapper in the Southeast United States is considered a single stock that is centred in south Florida (O’Hop et al. 2015). A study of the genetics of specimens from the Florida Keys, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands (Carson et al. 2011) supports the single stock hypothesis. The US-South Atlantic (SA) and Northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) regions are combined for the stock assessment but are managed separately. This profile refers to the Northern Gulf of Mexico and the Western Central Atlantic assessment unit.
