SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Sebastes spp

SPECIES NAME(s)

Atlantic redfishes nei, (multispecies)

COMMON NAMES

3LN

Uncertainty remains around the stock structure of S.fasciatus, with genetic and morphometric analyses suggesting similarities between fish from NAFO Divisions 3LN and 3O, but migration events between Division 3O and other areas suggest that it is precautionary to manage North and SE Grand Banks (Divisions 3LN) as a separate unit until more information is available (Valentin et al, 2005).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
    • The stock assessment process incorporates many best practices.
    • All redfish management area stocks are reviewed annually at zonal meetings, and a full assessment is conducted every two years. Conservation and Enforcement Measures that include a number of management and control regulations, a monitoring scheme, and inspection and surveillance measures have been established.
    • Closed areas to protect benthic communities and stocks under moratoria have also been utilized.
    • The combined Div. 3LN survey indices suggest that the stock biomass, female spawning biomass and abundance are higher in 2006 than in the early 1990s.
  • The stock assessment process incorporates many best practices.
