SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Sebastes mentella

SPECIES NAME(s)

Beaked redfish, Deepwater redfish

COMMON NAMES

Bering Sea beaked redfish

Three populations are discerned, isolated from each other by a system of marine currents: North Atlantic, Flemish-Cap, and Northeast Arctic. The population structure of the species in the southern part of its area corresponds to local stock. Interaction of the North Atlantic and the Northeast Arctic populations correspond to fluctuating stocks (Melnikov, 2016) .S. mentella in the northern North Sea and Barents Sea is not sub-structured (Klapper et al., 2016). The redfish population in the North Sea (ICES subarea 4) is believed to belong to the Northeast Arctic stock but is currently not included in the assessment (JRN-AFWG 2022).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • The stock biomass is in good condition, well above the target reference point (JRN-AFWG 2022).
