SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Aphanopus carbo

SPECIES NAME(s)

Black scabbardfish

Quinta et al. (2004) found significant genetic differences between Madeira and Hatton Bank and Sesimbra; Stefanni and Knutsen (2007) in turn identified two phylogroups; later, different populations were found by Gordo et al. (2009) according to life history parameters, otolith shape analysis, parasites, landings-and-effort data and contaminants. Farias et al. (2012) consider the existence of a single stock in the NE Atlantic region like assumed by ICES (ICES, 2014b). However we consider that the stock structure of black scabbardfish is not totally understood.

Correspondent to the type of fishing gears used and nature of fisheries and as well consistent with EU management areas ICES has considered 3 assessment units in the past: Northern unit including Divisions Vb and XIIb and Subareas VI and VII, Southern unit for Subareas VIII and IX and Other areas for Divisions IIIa and Va, Subareas I, II, IV, X, and XIV. But currently only one assessment unit is assumed comprising all Divisions and Subareas previously evaluated separately (ICES, 2014a,b).

Total Allowable Catches are defined considering 3 management units: I, II, III, IV; V, VI, VII, XII; and VIII, IX, X (EC, 2015).
