ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) produces periodic Marine Finfish Integrated Management of Aquaculture Plans (MF-IMAP) in order to identify the main objectives and management needs of the industry.
Weaknesses
  • The current management system does not employ a zonal approach to the planning and siting of farms. Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) are not required for aquaculture operations and there is no consideration of carrying capacity limits of receiving water bodies.
