FishSource version 2 has launched (15th Jan 2010, 6:40:00 pm UTC)

It’s been almost three years since FishSource was launched, and we’ve just launched our new look!

We hope you find that the site now has a more user-friendly interface. All the changes were introduced with the aim of providing users with a better understanding of the status of fisheries and fish stocks FishSource has information on.

FishSource also has improved search engines which operate on a broader range of criteria making access to fisheries much easier; new sections are also available, such as FAQs and News / announcements.

FishSource has now more than 180 fishery profiles live with more being added regularly.

Professor Emygdio Cadima awarded Doctor honoris causa (2nd Feb 2010, 6:00:01 am UTC)

Professor Emygdio Cadima has been awarded today with a Doctor honoris causa degree by the University of Algarve, Portugal, in a ceremony where Dr. Daniel Pauly was awarded as well. Professor Cadima has been an inspiring force for over the past 50 years having contributed massively to fisheries science, bestowing generations of students with his brightness as a teacher.

Emygdio Landerset Cadima specialized in Stock Assessment and Management of Fisheries Resources in 1959/60 at the Fisheries Laboratory of Lowestoft (UK), under the supervision of Raymond Beverton and John Gulland. Since 1959 he has worked on, and collaborated with, several institutions such as the North Atlantic Fisheries Advisory Committee, the St. Andrews Fisheries Laboratory, Canada (1962/64), the Assessment Division of the FAO Fisheries Department in Havana, Cuba (1964/68), the FAO, Rome (1969/74), the Portuguese National Institute for Fisheries Research (1974/86), the Portuguese Fisheries Secretariat (1974/76), the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, and the University of Algarve (1986-1997). At present, Professor Cadima is scientific adviser of the Portuguese Federation of Fishermen’s syndicates.

Matching his brilliance as a world-class scientist though, is his sense of friendship, solidarity, and justice, emerging, on the top of that, the perfect teacher. Professor Cadima has been a mentor to me ever since I’ve delved into fisheries science 17 years ago. I have had the honor of working many years with Cadima and am honoured to count him as a friend. It was under the supervision of Professor Cadima that in 1994 Jim Cannon (SFP CEO) and I first met and worked together on a EU fisheries research project.

Today, friends and colleagues come from all over the world to join Professor Cadima on this long-hoped and more than deserved homage. Cadima, beloved master and friend, thank you!
