The western stock is one of three stocks of horse mackerel in the Northeast Atlantic that have been distinguished based on genetic, parasite, morphometric, otolith and life history trait analyses, but the boundaries of their distribution areas have not been conclusively determined (ICES, 2009b). However, current EU TACs are not aligned with stocks and are undergoing a revision.
