The Southwest Nova Scotia – Bay of Fundy spawning component is the largest of the four components of the herring stock complex present in NAFO areas 4 VWX. The fishery on the Offshore Scotian Shelf Banks component started in 1996 and structured surveys have not been run since 2001. The Coastal Nova Scotia component is also incompletely surveyed. No increases in catch limits for these areas have been advised until more information is available. The Southwest New Bunswick Migrant Juvenile component is a mixture of juveniles from other regions so are not under a NAFO 4 VWX quota and the fishery is highly unpredictable with widely variable catches (DFO, 2009a).
